Portugal golf holidays - PGA Aroeira No.1 (Pines Classic Golf Course)

PGA Aroeira No.1 (Pines Classic Golf Course) Aroeira, Lisbon

Thirty minutes south of Lisbon, deep in a protected pine forest, PGA Aroeira No.1 was designed by Frank Pennink, the architect behind Vilamoura's Old Course, and opened in 1973. Visiting players nicknamed it the Wentworth of Lisbon, and it's gone on to host the Portuguese Open twice, a run of Ladies European Tour events, and the European Men's Club Trophy in 2013.
Tall avenues of pine frame every hole, with Robert Trent Jones Sr. later reworking the signature 11th. The course demands accuracy over power, rewarding precise placement off the tee to open up approaches into well-guarded, undulating greens. Recent storms hit the region hard, uprooting trees and damaging fairways, but the refurbishment since has been substantial: fairways have been completely rebuilt, bunkers reworked, and greens are back running true and disease-free. It's a course genuinely worth booking now, as it comes back into its best form.
One thing to know before you go: the driving range sits at the neighbouring No.2 course, a short shuttle away, and buggies are worth booking ahead, since larger groups can leave them in short supply. Book both nines together if your trip allows it, since No.1 and No.2 sit side by side and make for a genuinely varied two-round stay. For golfers who want a proper piece of Portuguese tournament history, this is the round to build a Lisbon trip around. (...)

Portugal golf holidays - PGA Aroeira No.2 (Challenge Golf Course)

PGA Aroeira No.2 (Challenge Golf Course) Aroeira, Lisbon

PGA Aroeira No.2 is Donald Steel's other Herdade da Aroeira design, opened in 2000 as Aroeira Challenge and renamed in 2024 as part of the resort's relaunch as PGA Aroeira Lisboa, Portugal's first PGA National venue. A major renovation through 2025 has rebuilt tee boxes, bunkers, fairways and greens while keeping Steel's original layout and routing intact, timed to mark the course's 25th anniversary.
Where No.1 asks for accuracy through pine avenues, No.2 plays a different game. Greens run large, some over 700 square metres, and Scottish-style pot bunkers sit among more conventional traps across the fairways. Five lakes come into play throughout, most persistently on the back nine, and five tees per hole keep it accessible to a genuine range of abilities despite its European Tour-standard credentials. Post-renovation, greens and bunkers are already in excellent shape, with fairways settling in well as the work beds in.
One thing worth knowing before you book: a new hotel is under construction at this course, due in 2028, so reception and clubhouse facilities remain temporary for now, with a short shuttle over from the No.1 clubhouse. The golf itself is the real draw here, and freshly renovated. Book No.1 and No.2 together for the full PGA Aroeira Lisboa experience, and you'll get two genuinely different Donald Steel tests in one trip. (...)

Portugal golf holidays - Quinta do Perú Golf Club

Quinta do Perú Golf Club Sesimbra, Lisbon

Quinta do Perú was designed by American architect Rocky Roquemore and opened in 1994 as the first golf course built in the Azeitão region, thirty minutes south of Lisbon, set against the Serra da Arrábida. It has hosted a Challenge Tour event and the Portuguese National Amateur Championship, and once ranked as high as 57th in Europe.
The parkland course winds through mature pines and cork oaks, threaded with wildflowers and laced with water throughout. The short 8th is guarded by a lake in front of the green, the par-four 12th runs alongside water all the way to the putting surface, and the sternest test comes at the 16th, a par three of more than 200 metres played entirely over a lake. Fast, true greens are the course's calling card, and guest feedback consistently backs that up.
Facilities include one of the best practice grounds in Portugal, a golf academy, resident professionals and a clubhouse restaurant with views back to the Arrábida hills. Pair it with PGA Aroeira nearby for a strong two-course stop south of the river, and book through Tee Times. (...)
