Within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Oitavos Dunes golf course was designed by the American architect Arthur Hills and opened in 2001, built with genuine care to preserve the dune ecosystem it sits on. It became the first course in Europe, and only the second in the world, to earn Audubon International's Gold Signature Sanctuary status, and it's hosted the Portuguese Open twice, in 2008 and 2009.
The round moves through three distinct landscapes: umbrella pine forest planted more than fifty years ago, wind-sculpted natural dunes, and open, exposed links-style terrain, with the Atlantic Ocean, the Sintra mountains and Cabo da Roca, continental Europe's westernmost point, in view throughout. Quick, sloping greens and genuine wind off the sea make club selection as important as the shot itself, and no two holes play the same. Book this if you want a genuine links experience without leaving mainland Portugal.
Facilities include a driving range, academy, locker rooms and a clubhouse with sea views, and the course is consistently rated Portugal's number one. Conditioning is excellent across the vast majority of visits, whatever the weather throws at it. One thing worth budgeting for: buggy hire here runs higher than most Portuguese courses and doesn't include GPS, so factor that into your day. For golfers who want the best course in the country and don't mind paying resort prices to play it, Oitavos Dunes is the one to book. (...)
